Webinar: Student With Episodic Disabilities in Canada: What You Need to Know!

http://www.realizecanada.org/en/students-with-episodic-disabilities-in-canada-what-you-need-to-know/

Disclosure ~ Accommodations ~ Information

The period of early adulthood is often stressful and fraught with issues related to living away from home for the first time. It is also during post-secondary education that some Canadians living with episodic disabilities experience the first onset of their lifelong, chronic health conditions. While there are rising numbers of students identifying a need for accommodations within post-secondary institutions it is unclear if students with episodic health conditions are also increasingly disclosing a need for accommodations. Indeed, there is very little information about students with episodic disabilities within the post-secondary context as there has been, to date, little explicit discussion of the needs of this group who are at times, unpredictably, disabled and are at other times, well.

In 2014, we at Realize began a project to start to better understand the barriers and facilitators to post-secondary education for students living with episodic health conditions.

Our early report on the topic, entitled “Episodic Disabilities and Post-Secondary Education in

Canada: A Review of the Literature” can be accessed here:

http://realizecanada.org/wp-content/uploads/FINAL_Lit_Review.pdf

We have also been involved in additional research in the area including a survey of students and service providers and a series of key informant interviews with academic staff.

Join us for this webinar where we will discuss this work and highlight barriers and facilitators to post-secondary education for students living with episodic health conditions.
